Campus Police Sergeant

Job Description

Work Week

40 Hours | Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., or 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. with flexible schedule to meet department needs to include days, evenings, and weekends

Position Summary

Provide supervision of campus police officers and maintain campus public safety. Responsible for field supervision of Campus Police Officers including; coordination, direction, training and other duties as delegated by the Chief of Police.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

- Supervise field operations of police officers and non-sworn personnel to ensure efficient operations
- Assist officers in patrolling the campus and impartial enforcement of applicable state, federal, and local laws
- Provide input/recommendations on staff performance evaluations, discipline, and terminations
- Evaluates candidates for positions and makes recommendations on hiring/staffing 
- Review and approve reports for accuracy, completeness, and professionalism. Includes the proper classification of reports with respect to requirements of the Illinois  Uniform Crime Report (IUCR) Determine status of reports submitted with regard to investigation, referral, and/or closure 
- Provide in field training and evaluations of officers within span of control and identifies training needs, making recommendations of appropriate training to ensure that competencies of the department personnel are developed and maintained at a professional level 
- Respond to campus emergencies and other calls for service; make arrests, make occasional court appearances 
- Researches/investigates/recommends equipment needs required to conduct the affairs of the department 
- Oversee investigation of criminal conduct, student code of conduct violations, and conducts administrative investigations as directed 
- Enforce parking and traffic rules and regulations 
- Coordinate traffic patterns for campus events
- Provide personal security consultation to administrators, faculty, staff, and students who are threatened, being followed, or stalked 
- Required to supervise staff during day or evening shift as determined by supervisor 
- Be subject to overnight and weekend on call for investigative and patrol assistance 
- Oversee the department administration in the absence of the Associate Vice President of Public Safety and Chief of Police 
- Work collaboratively with others (e.g. colleagues, stakeholders, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilities 
- Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

*Subject to Criminal Background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug test, physical fitness assessment, a fingerprint check prior to appointment, and may also include a polygraph examination.

*Position subject to Bloodborne Pathogen Legislation

Required Qualifications

- Associates degree from a regionally accredited institution 
- Seven years of experience in a law enforcement officer position 
- First Responder Certificate, or equivalent CPR, First Aid and AED Certification or specialized training 
- Valid driver’s license 
- Valid F.O.I.D. card
- Certification by the Illinois Local Governmental Law Enforcement Officer’s Training Board 
- Possess various access levels to LEADS
