Assistant Professor, Music (Fine Arts and Entertainment Technology)

Description

The Fine Arts and Entertainment Technology department at Santa Fe College (SF) offers an associate’s degree with transfer tracks in Art History, Art Studio disciplines, Dance, Music, Musical Theatre, and Theatre, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Multimedia and Video Production Technology and associate of science degrees in Theatre and Entertainment Technology, Graphic Design Technology, and Digital Media Technology. For over 50 years, faculty members in Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts have worked closely with SF students to provide an excellent education in the fine and performing arts as well as provide multiple opportunities for students to exhibit and perform throughout their time at the college. Students’ talents, along with their love of the arts, are nurtured and developed as they balance general education courses and program-specific work. 
 
The Fine Arts and Entertainment Technology department seeks an Assistant Professor with the ability to combine excellent teaching in general education courses with an innovative, forward-looking area of specialization within the discipline of music. The Assistant Professor will expertly ground students in fundamentals of the discipline and introduce them to contemporary trends within the field. Under general supervision, the Assistant Professor for Music will develop, prepare, and teach a variety of coursework related to both general education and discipline-specific music courses. The Assistant Professor will also provide service to the college and community and regularly engage in professional development and must have the flexibility to teach courses during the day, evening, or online, and is expected to maintain an on-campus presence throughout the week. 
 
This position’s starting salary is $48,360 annually. Any salary amount above this is commensurate upon an individual’s qualifications. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Plans, organizes, and delivers instruction to didactic, laboratory and/or classroom settings to promote student success within an open access, community college setting. 
  • Supports and promotes the college and departmental mission centered on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and timely service. 
  • Demonstrates technological literacy and innovation in the delivery of instruction and possesses facility with online learning management systems. 
  • Collaborates with the department chair, faculty, and peers to evaluate, revise, and develop curriculum that cultivates the mastery of course content. 
  • Collaborates with colleagues in helping students achieve General Education Learning Outcomes and preparing them for transfer to other institutions and/or for further study. 
  • Provides students with frequent, timely assessment and clear feedback regarding academic performance. 
  • Appropriately documents student progress and maintains records including attendance, grading, and student learning outcomes. 
  • Develops methods that fairly and accurately assess students’ progress in achieving the stated learning outcomes/objectives. 
  • Maintains appropriate office hours proportionate to the instructional assignment. 
  • Assists with the implementation of college policies, objectives, and functions in accordance with the SF philosophy, mission, strategic initiatives, and procedures. 
  • Actively participates in executing the college-wide Quality Enhancement Plan. 
  • Works collaboratively and collegially as part of a cohesive academic team, participates in departmental meetings and collegewide committees, and engages regularly in professional development activities. 
  • Strictly honors the privacy and security of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
  • Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  
Reports to: Chair, Fine Arts and Entertainment Technology

Qualifications

Required: Master’s degree in Music Education (MME) or master’s degree in Fine Arts (MFA) or a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Music.
Additional Requirements:  A criminal background check will be conducted.
Preferred:  Has a terminal degree in field with prior related work experience in an academic setting and/or prior teaching experience at student-centered institutions. Experience in a variety of contemporary pedagogies and practice and has the ability to teach in multiple fields within the discipline, as well as experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration. Is familiar with current trends within the field of Music.

  • Systems & Software - proficient level of knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or relevant position software programs.
  • Detail Oriented - Proven accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Multi-task - Ability to expeditiously organize, coordinate, manage, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously to swiftly assess a situation, determine a logical course of action, and apply the appropriate response.
