Lees-McRae is a small, private, liberal arts college, located in the Appalachian region of the Southeastern United States. The college is at an exciting time of growth in its online presence and online learning has been identified as a priority initiative in our 2030 INEXPRO Strategic Plan. Currently, the college offers 7 undergraduate programs and 3 graduate programs online. Online courses are offered during 16-week and 8-week terms, depending on the program, and are asynchronous. Summary/ObjectiveLees-McRae College, in Banner Elk, NC invites applications for the position of Program Coordinator for Online and Distance Learning and Assistant Professor of Teacher Education within the School of Education and Social Sciences. The Teacher Education program at Lees-McRae is recognized for its outstanding programs in Elementary Education, Special Education, and our MAT in Secondary Education. Our programs have received many state and national accolades, including being rated as one of the top 40 online education programs in North Carolina. Our graduates are accepted in many upper tier graduate schools and are eagerly employed in public, private, and charter schools in North Carolina and surrounding states.Lees-McRae College is seeking an individual of distinguished achievement and accomplishment to expand the outstanding programs currently in place. Ideally, this individual will have the expertise in the areas of K-6 literacy curriculum or mathematics and science curriculum and standards. The person selected for this position will have taught in public schools and will have current teaching certification in North Carolina or be eligible for teaching certification in Elementary Education.The Assistant Professor of Teacher Education will share LMC’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, experiential learning, and community engagement.This is a 12 -month position and has a 1-course per semester reassignment from teaching for administrative duties.

Essential Functions as Program Coordinator

Advising duties:

  • Advising prospective and current students about academic requirements, selection of courses, and other student needs throughout the year
  • Maintains student files and update them throughout their academic career
  • Audit student records for compliance and progress toward graduation
  • Assists with the evaluation of transfer credits and transferability
  • Identifies and coordinates with interdisciplinary team for at-risk students or students who need assistance
  • Answers inquires for the Surry Community College-based programs as well as online programs

Compliance and placement support duties:

  • Maintain working relationships with other colleges and K-12 schools
  • Works with students on access to the learning platform
  • Obtains and monitors compliance documentation
  • Assists in preparing reports necessary for continued accreditation approval
  • Communicates with K-12 schools regarding plans for student placements in EDU programs
  • Maintains an up-to-date inventory of potential placement sites

Administrative duties: Answer inquiries, check campus mail, directs any visitors, keep files up to date in filing room and in our online databases, monitor and assist with budgets, order, update, and receive supplies. Provide administrative support to Academic Affairs – especially to the Director of Online and Distance Learning and the Dean of Education and Social Sciences – to ensure program process and outcomes. Provide assistance as needed to faculty, students and staff.

Recruitment duties: Continues to work with SCC personnel during college fairs as well as direct contact with professors and classes, as appropriate; maintains network of contacts with nearby schools (K-12, colleges, universities) and assists Enrollment Management as needed. Establishes recruiting activities with local K-12 school systems and community colleges.

Essential Functions as Assistant Professor

  • Know and be able to teach standards-based lessons within the teacher education program
  • Provide short and long-range course planning for the undergraduate teacher education program with an emphasis on the literacy course of study
  • Maintain and improve the quality of all teacher education programs
  • Create and provide evidence-based instruction to assist students in acquiring key student learning outcomes
  • Assist in mentoring/preparing students to take teacher licensure examinations
  • Participate and lead community-based learning activities with school partners (public, private, and charter schools and community groups)
  • Supervise and mentor students within their clinical settings
  • Collaborate with, and train, mentor teachers to provide ongoing mentoring activities for students in clinical settings
  • Provide leadership in directing and leading the faculty and staff to achieve the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the Teacher Education program, the School of Education and Social Sciences, and Lees-McRae College
  • Participate on key committees at the program level and school level
  • Work with college officials and community partners to ensure delivery of high-quality programming

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of North Carolina Standard Course of Study standards and objectives
  • Exhibits ability to provide supervision of student interns and student teachers in clinical settings.
  • Develops and maintains evidence-based lessons/instruction to assist students in acquiring student learning outcomes
  • Plans, prepares, and executes focused instruction, assessment, course creation
  • Maintains personal professional development by remaining current with the body of knowledge in teacher education and evidenced based practices
  • Exhibits ability to maintain required programming data and assessment reports

Supervisory Responsibility
Mentor and Assist with supervision of adjunct instructors

Work Environment
Normal office environment where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise and the like.

The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, hybrid position with 2-3 days per week at our distance site on the campus of Surry Community College and 2-3 days per week working remotely. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel
Local travel will be expected for recruitment activities.

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD or EdD education from an accredited institution
  • A current Elementary Education (K-6) NC teaching license or be eligible for licensure in North Carolina.
  • A minimum of five years of teaching in public or private K-12 schools with experience teaching literacy/reading or math
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task
