Duties and Responsibilities

Application Pool Notice
Laredo College continuously accepts applications for part-time (adjunct) instructors to create a pool of candidates for each session/semester.  Applications will be reviewed and positions will be filled based on department needs. Applications received for this pool will remain active for one year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide instruction and monitor teaching / learning effectiveness in courses assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education, or Provost / Vice President of Academic Affairs and in which the instructor has appropriate qualifications. Use up-to-date discipline and pedagogical skills to ensure active participation and learning by students.
 
Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop, evaluate, and revise programs, courses, and objectives to ensure instructional and programmatic responsiveness to the occupational and academic needs of students and to ensure instructional quality as demonstrated by students' achievement of competency-based objectives.
  2. Stay current of changes that occur in the discipline. Participate in departmental initiatives to infuse changes into curriculum. Participate in interdisciplinary discussions which are directed at improving student learning and evaluating core competencies curriculum.
  3. Prepare and, on the first day of class, distribute syllabi which inform students about course requirements, grading requirements, testing assignments, attendance policy, and other pertinent information for each course assigned.
  4. Participate in meetings called by the Dean of Workforce Education, Provost / Vice President of Academic Affairs, or Department Chair for the purpose of disseminating information, providing input into the decision making process, and sharing expertise with colleagues.
  5. Prepare professional development plan in consultation with the Department Chair; review plan on an on-going basis with the Department Chair; work with assigned peer/mentor.
  6. Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner to inform students about their progress and to provide opportunities which will allow students to succeed. Use multiple measurements of assessment. Include opportunities for research and outside assignments.
  7. Provide a safe environment for students and be responsible for the security of assigned equipment, materials, and classrooms.
  8. Encourage use of support services by students. Collaborate with support services staff to ensure that appropriate information is being shared and discussed.
  9. Work the required teaching load assigned with required designated office hours as deemed necessary to meet student's needs for consultation and or tutoring purposes.
  10. Participate as a faculty advisor during the registration process and during the semester by providing accurate career counseling and guidance at time assigned by the Department Chair or Dean of Workforce Education. Use the Program Degree Guide on an on-going basis to maintain current information about each student.
  11. Provide appropriate information to Library staff regarding desired discipline materials.
  12. Respond to requests for information from the Dean of Workforce Education, or Provost / Vice President of Academic Affairs offices.
  13. Follow procedures related to the Registration Office, including grade reports and deadlines; attendance record reports; withdrawal deadlines; class changes; and time and room scheduling.
  14. Participate in the preparation and updating of class schedules and the Catalog.
  15. Distribute student evaluation forms on a timely basis.
  16. Participate in faculty evaluations as described by the Department Chair and or the Dean of Workforce Education.
  17. Serve as peer mentor when requested.
  18. Follow proper procedures for requesting textbooks, instructional supplies, and expendable supplies; submit travel and absentee reports on a timely basis.
  19. Participate in career days for elementary and secondary school students; participate in civic activities for the purpose of communicating services provided by the College.
  20. Promote the College's programs and curricula.
  21. Follow the academic calendar and other policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Trustees.
  22. Participate in Southern Association accreditation activities; assist in the preparation and implementation of Institutional Effectiveness plan in occupational area.
  23. Perform other duties assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education, or Provost / Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Minimum Associate Degree in the teaching field.   
  • Minimum 3 year's professional industry experience in the teaching field.
Preferred:
  • Degree in Computer Information Systems or closely related field.
  • Teaching experience desirable.
  • Industry certification in related teaching field

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have knowledge of operation and control of the types of computer systems used by the department, or similar systems.
  • Must have knowledge of computer networks, microcomputer operating environments, and applications software packages. 
  • Must know or be able to learn what teaching and testing materials are being used for all Computer Information Systems courses taught at Laredo College.
  • Must be able to prepare error-free student testing materials.
  • Should reflect appropriate office and telephone etiquette and procedures.
  • Should be poised and articulate in English and in Spanish.
  • Must exhibit discipline competence; pedagogical competence, while engaging with students and must focus on student learning.
  • Must be capable of operating specialized laboratory equipment and must have ability to use current technology to enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Must have concern of academic progress of students.
  • Must possess cooperative and professional skill while dealing with College administrators, colleagues and students.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
