History DepartmentAbout the Department
The History Department is a varied group of scholars covering many areas of specialization. We pride ourselves on outstanding teaching. We offer many small classes that allow a great deal of individual attention. The History major is a place to get a “small college” education in a big state university. The department of thirty professors has about two hundred fifty majors in four undergraduate programs, the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts with a Teacher Education Concentration, the Bachelor of Arts with a Legal History Concentration, and the Bachelor of Sciences. All programs offer a great deal of student choice in courses and electives, allowing the pursuit of either a broad educational experience or a focused study. Our 80 student graduate program offers three distinct degrees: the M.A. in History, the M.A. in Public History, and the Ph.D. in Public History . However, all three degree programs require a strong foundation in traditional history.
Essential Job Duties
The Department of History at North Carolina State University invites applicants for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of Modern Africa, beginning August 2025. We seek to identify a candidate who has strong promise as a scholar and teacher and whose research engages with a period from the 18th century to the present. Candidates who can contribute to ongoing conversations about topics of contemporary historical concern – for example, race, ethnic & religious identities, gender, sexuality, slavery, social justice, empire, colonialism, nationalism and state formation, politics of extraction and development, health and the environment, migration, or global connections – are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will teach introductory survey courses and upper-level courses in their areas of expertise, and share in the teaching of core courses in the undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
The successful candidate may supervise undergraduate honors theses and MA theses in the history of modern Africa; work with MA and PhD students in the department’s Public History program; or contribute to innovative digital work that is one of the department’s strengths. The successful candidate will join a History Department whose faculty share a deep commitment not only to outstanding scholarship but also to rigorous, innovative classroom instruction and public-facing projects. All faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.
