Technical Instructor

Job Description

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, Mechanical Engineering, for the Pappalardo Laboratory will provide fabrication support and instruction for engineering design and fabrication activities within the lab; work on all phases of the major design-build courses taught in the department; instruct students in the safe and proper use of equipment; provide expertise and instruction on mechanical design and engineering issues; develop lab teaching tools for lab’s undergraduate programs; teach lab recitations, labs for design, build lab-based courses, and act as a key resource for students and staff involved with project-oriented courses and projects spanning a wide range of complexity; maintain safe and efficient operations in the machine shop, conducting training as needed, and proactively identifying curricular opportunities; have close interaction and collaboration with faculty members to actively problem solve on student projects, maintain the class timeframe and schedule, and teach core subject matter.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in Design, Engineering, or related field with a minimum of four years relevant experience; expertise with equipment and prototyping processes of the lab (e.g., CNC and manual mills, lathes, water-jet, woodshop equipment, painting, hand-tools, laser cutters, 3-D printing) and willingness to receive on-the-job training; design resourcefulness; fabricator and maker skills; an aptitude for problem-solving; ability to multitask in order to promote the smooth operation of the lab’s fast-paced activities; and comfort working with and for international faculty, students, and staff and sensitivity to a diverse social and international group; team-oriented approach to teaching and supporting students, faculty, and technical staff and ability to develop comfortable working relationships with all of the MIT faculty and staff. This is a full-time, twelve-month staff position. The position is a "term" position and is subject to annual renewals based on continued need, available funding and mutual agreement.

Occasional night and weekend availability is needed during the academic semesters.
