The JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University offers summer camps for preschool to middle school age students. Camps deliver science-based information in a fun, engaging format through mysteries that campers solve, cooking lessons, and garden exploration activities. The unique setting of the camp, seamless blending of outdoor adventure with science, and intimate ratio of campers to instructors are a few of our most touted features.
The JC Raulston Arboretum is looking for a charismatic, engaging Lead Teacher for our Summer Garden Camps. The Lead Teacher is the primary presenter of a camp’s activities and the primary point of interaction for campers and their parents. This important role sets the tone for the camp by engaging the campers, guiding their exploration of topics, and ensuring their well-being in a camp setting.
The Lead Teacher will be hired to teach multiple weeks of camp. The camp schedule and descriptions of the camps are posted on the summer camp webpage on the JCRA’s website (https://jcra.ncsu.edu/education/childrens-program/summer-garden-camps/index.php)
All camps have well established and documented lesson plans that teachers can use as is or make additions to with approval from JCRA staff. The Lead teacher work with the Education Team prior to camp to ensure content and quality of the programming continues to deliver excellent experiences for campers and families. Teachers also have the support of education interns (college-aged students) and adult JCRA volunteers during camp activities and can help with camp preparations. Camp activities take place entirely on JCRA property in the JCRA’s education yurt and gardens. Teachers will be expected to attend a pre-camp meeting and also complete camp preparations prior to camp week to ensure all camp materials are ready.
Job Duties:
- Lead campers in a variety of garden based lessons and activities for ages 4-13 and develop any additional activities as needed.
- Oversee daily operation of camp including signing campers in and out of camp each day, lesson preparation, clean up, and documenting camp with photos or written notes.
- Supervise campers to ensure their well-being and enjoyment of camp.
- Work with the summer education interns and volunteers during camp and preparation of activities.
- Complete additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education
- Degree in Child Development or similar with a K-6 Teaching License
Department Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience in elementary grades (K-5)
- At least 5 years of camp teaching/leadership experience
- Previous experience teaching outdoors or working in a public garden setting
- Creative, energetic personality with joyful, sincere interest in working with children in an outdoor setting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills
- Must be able to work effectively as part of the Children’s Program and Summer Camp team
- Physical ability to lift materials (bins of program materials, art supplies, plants and soil, water cooler, etc) and operate garden equipment
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Ability to engage children in learning activities, develop and follow curriculum and create organized activities for children and youth
Required License or Certification
- Current NC Teaching license
- CPR/First Aid certified or the ability to obtain one by start date
- Valid driver’s license
