Position Summary

The Criminal Justice department at Bellevue College is accepting applications for an Assistant Adjunct Professor starting in Fall 2024. The Assistant Adjunct Professor will teach two to three courses per quarter in person at the Bellevue College campus in collaboration with the Program Chair. Courses meet twice per week for either 50 minutes, or twice per week for 1 hour and 50 minutes. In-person courses can be scheduled between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and are taught in a hybrid format (e.g. Monday/Wednesday from 10:30 - 11:20 a.m., Monday/Wednesday 12:30 - 2:20 p.m.).

Depending on qualifications and student enrollment, the instructor may have the option to teach either three in-person courses, or a combination of two in-person courses and one online course. These are temporary faculty positions, typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Anticipated quarterly teaching responsibilities will include one/two courses of CJ& 101: Introduction to Criminal Justice, and one of the following:

CJ& 105: Corrections

CJ& 106: Juvenile Justice

CJ& 110: Criminal Law

CJ& 112: Criminology

Other responsibilities include participation in assessing student learning outcomes; developing, revising, and implementing curriculum; maintaining current knowledge and skills in the area of assignment and demonstrating a strong commitment to student success and fostering a positive, caring learning environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $5,716.52 - $6,968.62 . Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement. Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department

Criminal Justice is a professional/technical program within the Social Science Division of Bellevue College. Our online Criminal Justice program is ranked second in the state for excellent quality. Students with our AAS-T CJ degree can do a direct transfer to UW-Tacoma or Evergreen State University. Our students are also prepared with the AAS-DTA with Criminal Justice academic concentration program to transfer to UW, WSU, CWU, EWU or other state criminal justice programs or go directly into law enforcement, the courts or corrections employment.

The Criminal Justice program offers a broad curriculum of courses each quarter that include the Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminology, Juvenile Justice, American Corrections, Criminal Law.

Essential Functions

Teach three 5-credit courses per quarter. Typical class size is 36 students.
Teach a range of courses from the department's offerings as assigned. Courses could include Introduction to Criminal Justice, Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Criminal Law, Criminology, or other specialties (depending on qualifications and course offerings)
Hold office hours in accordance with the current faculty contract.
Grade and/or provide useful feedback to students in a timely manner.
Assess student learning relative to course learning outcomes.
Incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and culturally responsive pedagogy into teaching, learning, and mentoring.
Foster a positive, caring, equitable learning environment where differences and pluralism are valued, and all students have opportunities to be successful learners.
Use data, self-reflection, and student/colleague feedback to revise your instruction, improve student success and better serve historically underserved, underrepresented, or marginalized student populations (e.g. students with disabilities, black and indigenous students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQIA+ students, veterans, English language learners, etc).

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Criminal Justice from an accredited institution.
A minimum of 1 year of professional experience in law enforcement, courts, probation, corrections, or federal agency experience.
Working knowledge of law enforcement, courts, and corrections organizations in the United States.
Availability to teach in person.
Demonstrated ability to teach CJ& 101: Introduction to Criminal Justice survey.
Familiarity with an online learning management system (e.g. Canvas or Blackboard).
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

One year college or community college teaching experience (teaching assistant or instructor of record)
Demonstrated ability to teach at least two to three of the following courses: Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Criminal Law, Criminology, Race and Justice, Police Evidence, or Forensics/Criminalistics.
Experience with Canvas online learning management system.
Experience with and dedication to incorporating educational equity into teaching practices to address the needs of students of varied identities and backgrounds, and closing opportunity gaps for historically marginalized students.
