Shoreline's English as a Second Language (ESL) program serves students in levels 1-7, including immigrant and international students from a diverse range of linguistic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Students' language learning is supported by our center. The ESL program also promotes innovative learning experiences such as bridge courses with professional-technical programs, cross-disciplinary team teaching, and integration with other programs across the college campus.

The individual must be able to teach a wide range of levels, from beginning English levels to academic reading and writing courses to both immigrant and international populations. They should also bring an interest and expertise in utilizing technology to provide engaging and innovative language learning experiences for our students. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will advise students, assist with assessment of current instructional methods, develop programs and curricula, and participate in Shoreline governance, as well as department, division, and campus-related professional activities. NOTE: An on-campus presence is required for this position.

Faculty at Shoreline will have an array of students from differing programs in their classroom, including professional technical and university transfers. Shoreline seeks a candidate that can identify and mitigate the barriers to success that many students face and be passionate about creating an equitable learning environment that supports success for all students.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

• Master's degree in English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics with TESOL coursework; OR Master's degree in Adult Education specializing TESOL; OR closely related field with coursework in language teaching methodology and language acquisition theories,
• Two (2) years of experience teaching ESL in a higher education environment

Knowledge of

• Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems, and other appropriate in instructional technology
• Principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) as they apply to teaching, student support, and curriculum development
• Testing/teaching approaches in the field of ESL including CASAS, I-BEST, and College and Career Readiness standards
• Instructional approaches for both immigrant and international students for a variety of levels including academic ESL/composition

Skill in

• Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through culturally responsive teaching
• Commitment to student engagement in the instruction of English and a Second Language
• Experience with teaching, developing coursework online, and using emerging technologies
• Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
• Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities
• Developing/modifying curriculum, course content and assessment tools both collaboratively and independently, using the latest field-specific research findings and educational techniques
• Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
• Applying current theories and research on teaching/learning styles, collaborative learning, assessment, and multicultural education
• Experience teaching ESL in multiple modalities, including face to face, online, hybrid, and/or online synchronous
• Effective classroom management, including facilitating/navigating challenging conversations

Conditions of Employment

Physical Work Environment:
The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online) operations, with the option for some assignments to completed in an online environment based on program or area needs. If authorized by the College for remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Faculty typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment.

Term of Employment/Salary:
This is a full-time, tenure track position, with a 172-day annual contract beginning September 19, 2024. Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with educational preparation. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
