The university is undertaking major new initiatives in Data Science and Machine Learning, supported by existing efforts in related disciplines. The Department of Computer Science at UMD is consistently ranked among the top-15 nationally.  CSRankings ranks UMD #5 nationally when considering all subfields of Artificial Intelligence.  The Department of Mathematics is ranked #22 nationally, and it separately offers Ph.D. programs in Mathematics, Statistics, and AMSC (Applied Mathematics and Statistics and Scientific Computation). The latter is an interdisciplinary program that is ranked #12 nationally.  UMD is located just a few miles and a 20-minute metro ride from downtown DC.  Its location facilitates interaction with government agencies and many national labs, such as NIH, NIST, ARL, NRL, and NASA Godard.

The College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences is recruiting to fill three endowed Professor positions in Data Science and Machine Learning.  Outstanding mid-career and senior candidates across all sub-fields, including applications of machine learning or data science in any area; and candidates working in foundational areas as well as interdisciplinary candidates working in exciting domains will be considered. Successful applicants may have a home department in Computer Science, Mathematics, or another appropriate department, or may have a joint appointment in two departments. 

Ph.D. in appropriate academic discipline. Strong demonstrated record in research, mentoring, and service to the broader scientific community. 

Applicants are strongly encouraged to have complete versions of their materials – including a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, and the names of at least four references – uploaded by December 31, 2021. Successful applicants may have a home department in Computer Science, Mathematics, or another appropriate department, or may have a joint appointment in two departments.  Candidates should indicate their preferred home department and whether they might be interested in such a joint appointment in their cover letter.
