Braille Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to positively transform the lives of those with vision loss. We offer a broad range of free programs, classes and services serving thousands of students of all ages helping to demonstrate that vision rehabilitation is a beginning, not an end.

We serve the community from seven centers, and hundreds of community outreach locations throughout Southern California, and lead popular national programs like Braille Challenge and Cane Quest. Our staff and volunteers understand losing your vision can be scary, but we believe it is not the end of independence but a new way of living.

About the role:

The Instructor will be responsible for teaching various subjects and/or independent living skills to the visually impaired. May also conduct seminars and workshops throughout the region for families, caregivers, and professionals to better assist the visually impaired and promote independent living. Implements accessibility-driven teaching strategies to educate students in in-person, hybrid and/or online formats.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Instructs visually impaired students in a variety of subjects in order to achieve independent living and provide enrichment.
• Monitors, evaluates, and documents student progress, recommending additional resources and support to students and families as needed.
• Researches subject matter and, in collaboration with the Educational Programs Lead, develops curricula for classroom instruction.
• Works in collaboration with the Educational Programs Lead and educators across BIA centers to provide continuity in departmental instruction.
• Prepares lesson plans as needed.
• Gathers supplies, adaptive devices, and materials needed to teach students.
• Assures in-person and online classrooms are set up each day with supplies, tools, equipment, and materials needed for an effective and safe learning environment.
• Prepares and maintains appropriate forms and documentation for each class as required, such as attendance and student progress.
• May design and conduct seminars, workshops, and training sessions throughout an assigned region to educate families, caregivers, and professionals on issues related to the visually impaired, as well as to promote the organization's programs and services within the community.
• May participate in planning and/or preparation for special events to benefit the visually impaired.
• Acquires knowledge of research and advancements in the subject matter taught, as well as the organization's programs and services and other resources for the visually impaired.
• Makes use of professional development workshops and resources.
• May train and direct the work of volunteers assisting in classrooms.

Knowledge and Education:

• A Bachelor’s degree (ex/ BA) in a designated field of expertise is preferred (or may be substituted with one year of teaching experience).
• Strong knowledge of the subject matter taught is required.
• Previous online teaching experience is desirable.
• Instructors must be fully bilingual in Spanish and English.

Skills and Abilities:

• The position requires good communication, training, interpersonal, assessment, research, computer, presentation, organizational, and time management skills.
• The ability to effectively teach visually impaired students in a particular field of expertise is essential.

Experience:

• At least one to two years of experience teaching in a designated field of expertise is desirable.
• Some work experience with the visually impaired is desirable.
