About the College of Engineering Office of Faculty Advancement
The Faculty Advancement unit provides over 300 faculty with the tools needed to succeed and excel at all levels and intersections of their careers. It utilizes traditional resources, as well as innovative techniques to encourage outstanding research, teaching and professional development by providing transformational faculty development programs, directly impacting the research productivity, teaching effectiveness and the extension mission of COE faculty and department heads.

The Office’s mission is to recruit, promote and retain excellent faculty across the College; actively engage faculty, administrators and staff across departments; and celebrate faculty success, achievement and promotion.

Essential Job Duties

The Associate Director (AD) reports to the Associate Dean of Engineering Faculty Advancement (ADEFA) at NC State University. The Associate Director will regularly collaborate/cooperate with the Associate Dean of Engineering Faculty Advancement to help deliver high quality support to our faculty in COE at all levels. This includes developing, implementing, assessing, and delivering a range of programs that provide professional development of individual faculty and academic leaders, as well as supporting the implementation of institution-wide initiatives and administrative policies related to faculty. 

The associate director will be responsible for developing and delivering workshops, providing and implementing the latest pedagogy in the science of STEM education delivery, improved student learning outcomes, mentoring science and best practices for student engagement. The AD will also become a resource not only to faculty at NC State, but will also share these best practices and latest research in faculty advancement and student/faculty engagement nationally at conferences and in peer reviewed journals.

The Associate Director will collaborate closely with other members of the faculty advancement staff, the dean’s office, faculty, and maintain working relationships and communication with the NC State Provost’s office, and colleges across the NC State community.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Collaborate with the associate dean to develop and promote a shared vision that drives faculty advancement short and long-term strategic planning.
  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and management of faculty development programming that focuses on faculty needs at all career stages and faculty appointment types and roles.
  • Create and deliver lecture materials and workshops on best practices in the realms of faculty responsibilities and professional development including best practices for faculty/student engagement and success, research best practices and developing a successful graduate research program, and teaching delivery and student learning.
  • Conduct applied research and contribute to the literature related to the science and scholarship of faculty development and success
  • Responsible for the development and continuous improvement of faculty programming by leading departmental assessment and evaluation efforts with specific goals and measurable outcomes.
  • Represent associate dean and unit on university and community committees, task force, and work groups.
  • Facilitate collaboration and development of relationships and strategic partnerships across the college and campus, including colleges such as Colleges of Science, Natural Resources and others, OIED, Finance, Information Technology, and Communications.
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean in the review and development of unit initiatives and practices to increase access for diverse populations and ensure an inclusive work environment.
  • Manage and develop strategies for the marketing and communications operation of the unit, to increase program participation and increase brand awareness for college and campus constituencies.

Specific responsibilities for the Associate Director, Faculty Advancement include:
  • Supervision of staff, website developer, postdocs, PhD graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars coach
  • Design and deliver faculty development programs to support faculty success in research, scholarship and creative activities, and faculty productivity.
  • Collection and management of data related to program history, participation, and outcomes.
  • Author articles that would be placed in the EFA Newsletter and any that would be important to share at the national level
  • Represent College on external professional society engagement
  • Leadership in collaborative programming and scheduling for engineering graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, programming with consideration of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Assessment and reporting of initiatives and programming to ensure relevant content that meet faculty needs and ensure maintenance of excellence.
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean on development of budget needed for personnel and programmatic initiatives.
  • Create EFA website content;; coordinate with website developers.
  • Implementation of collaborative programming marketing plans.

Other Responsibilities

The Associate Director has a leadership role in the College representing the Associate Dean in key discussions with both faculty and college level leadership (e.g., department heads, assistant and associate deans)

The Associate Director also communicates on behalf of the Associate Dean, as appropriate to the Dean and Provost offices on university level initiatives (e.g., Faculty Scholars, Cluster hires, Diversity initiatives).

General responsibilities include:

Strategic planning:
  • Faculty Advancement programs and special initiatives supportive of professional COE faculty professional development; initiatives for pre-tenure, women and URM faculty; PURPOSE Institute; ADVANCE-Eng Women Engineering Faculty; other NSF ADVANCE programs at NCSU
  • Generate ideas for planning processes and programming that include workshops, funding agency visits, and events that enrich faculty career development
  • Plan initiatives that encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and relationships
  • Generate activities that impact the development and success of students in Mentoring Incubator initiative
  • Attend and participate in collaboration meetings to work on funding ideas and publications
  • Develop surveys, work w/professional assessor to develop assessment plan to measure effectiveness of Faculty Advancement programs and their benefit to faculty

Financial and Budgetary oversight:
  • Management of unit budget resources; create and maintain budgets for programs and initiatives, personnel; oversee and approve expenditures to ensure compliance with balanced budgets; ensure that final reports completed and submitted on time
  • Management of Associate Dean’s grant budget resources; create budgets for projects; oversee and approve expenditures to ensure compliance with balanced budgets; fiscal responsibility for oversight of budgets including purchases, payroll, no cost extensions; ensure that final reports on grants are completed and submitted on time
  • Play critical role in decisions regarding resource allocation and management based on strategic objectives; ensure accurate compliant and timely expenditures and reporting
  • Maintain contract execution and compensation for outside consultants and speakers
  • Evaluate effectiveness of programs by developing surveys and data collecting plans, including keeping track of funding generated due to faculty participation in programs.
  • Play critical role in decisions regarding resource allocation and management based on strategic objectives; ensure accurate and timely expenditures

Personnel and Project Support:
  • Leadership in recruitment and hiring project based personnel
  • Supervising and direct event coordinator, communications coordinator, student interns and web development team
  • Liaison and primary communicator between Associate Dean and team
  • Convey an inclusive work environment that fosters teamwork
  •  Ongoing relationship building and interaction with and support of faculty
  • Direct implementation of website development for the Faculty Advancement unit and for PURPOSE Institute; train and supervise personnel to keep website updated

Specific responsibilities include providing logistical support and leading as appropriate aspects of the following projects and initiatives:
  • New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW) coordinator: Responsibilities include developing 9-month timeline for planning and execution of tasks for successful orchestration of the event; convening NFOW administrators meetings; collecting new hire data from COE departments; offering suggestions and insights; disseminating invitations; communicating with speakers; oversight for completion and execution of workshop logistics; compiling final report.
  • Faculty Advancement Programmatic Assessment: Maintains comprehensive historical documents and analysis reports of Faculty Advancement efforts, programs, initiatives; collaboration with external evaluator on data analysis for assessment of impact and relevancy for the purpose of continually improving effectiveness of program outcomes; also create surveys and direct and indirect measure for past actions and future strategic planning, further development and improvement of program and program outcomes.
  • Contributing authorship: on papers and proposals in the realm of research and scholarship; collaborate on creation and approval of Institutional Research Board (IRB) applications as needed in unit.
  • Attends COE Research Committee meetings to report on Faculty Advancement programming and glean content for relevant research programming
  • Broadening participation: providing leadership Mentoring Incubator. This includes student mentoring, media development and connections with external constituencies (e.g., national lab personnel). Work as needed on Broadening Participation collaborations at K-12, undergraduate and graduate levels ( e.g., with Minority Engineering Program office)
  • Extension and Engagement with Constituencies outside the University: This position also supports the direction of the PURPOSE Institute for Minority Faculty Development and work on underrepresented student development via established or emerging formal or informal mentoring programs.
  • Student support, i.e., coordinate student hiring (e.g., initial paperwork and background checks); student mentoring and development; attend students’ poster sessions;
  • Travel: represent Associate Dean and College and University at national professional conferences to contribute and glean information relevant to aspects of faculty development, diversity and broadening participation that contribute to the University’s, College’s and unit’s strategic plan and vision for the success of the faculty and institution. Plan and accompany faculty on funding agency visits.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in fields related to STEM, Communications
  • Prior staff or student supervisory experience and demonstration of superior management and sound judgment decision making ability
  • Presentation and training experience

  • Demonstrated passion for and experience in the science related to mentoring
  • Demonstrated experience working with engineering faculty
  • An understanding of the land grant, research Tier One university environment
  • Familiarity with NC State University and college of engineering faculty, climate, and culture
